Hawaii Warriors Dig Deep to Defeat SMU Mustangs in Five Sets

The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the SMU Mustangs in five sets on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Junior outside hitter Caylen Alexander led the way for Hawaii with a career-high 28 kills, while senior setter Norene Iosia dished out a season-high 55 assists.

Alexander's Career Night

Alexander was unstoppable for the Rainbow Wahine, hitting .432 with 28 kills and just three errors on 53 swings. She also added two blocks and two digs.

According to Hawaii head coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, Alexander's performance was a reflection of her hard work and dedication.

"Caylen has been working really hard in practice, and it showed tonight," Ah Mow-Santos said. "She was seeing the block well and making smart shots."

Iosia's Record-Setting Performance

Iosia was also brilliant for Hawaii, setting a new season-high with 55 assists. She also added nine digs, three kills, and two blocks.

Iosia's performance was particularly impressive considering that she was playing with a new starting lineup.

"I'm really proud of the way our team played tonight," Iosia said. "We had a lot of new players in the starting lineup, but we were able to come together and get the win."

Comeback Win for Hawaii

The Rainbow Wahine trailed 2-1 after three sets, but they rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets to secure the victory.

Hawaii hit .269 in the fourth set and .323 in the fifth set to close out the match.

According to Ah Mow-Santos, the Rainbow Wahine's resilience was key to their comeback win.

"I'm really proud of the way our team fought back tonight," Ah Mow-Santos said. "We never gave up, and we were able to come away with the win."

Conclusion

The Rainbow Wahine's victory over SMU was a hard-fought team effort. Alexander's career night, Iosia's record-setting performance, and the team's resilience were all key factors in the win.

Hawaii will now look to build on their momentum when they take on the UC Irvine Anteaters on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
