The 24-year-old has earned four caps for his country and is the second signing Brighton have made in this transfer window, following the arrival of Levi Colwill from Chelsea.

Wieffer began his career at Dutch club Excelsior and joined Feyenoord in 2020, making 70 appearances for the Rotterdam side.

He helped Feyenoord win the UEFA Europa Conference League last season and also featured in the Netherlands' run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi said: "I'm very happy to welcome Mats to our club and to the Premier League. He is a young player with a lot of potential, who has already shown his quality at Feyenoord and the Netherlands national team."

"He is a very good footballer who can play in different positions in midfield. I'm sure he will be a valuable addition to our squad and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Wieffer said: "I'm delighted to have joined Brighton and Hove Albion. It's a great club with a very good manager and I'm looking forward to playing in the Premier League."

"I've been impressed with the way Brighton play and I think it's a club where I can continue to develop my game. I'm excited about the future and I'm looking forward to helping the team achieve its goals."

Wieffer is expected to be available for Brighton's pre-season match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
