A Rare Occurrence In Nhl History

Only Twice Has Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final Needed Overtime

A Rare Occurrence in NHL History

In the thrilling world of ice hockey, the Stanley Cup Finals represent the pinnacle of achievement, where the greatest teams battle it out for the coveted trophy. While most series conclude in regulation time, there have been a few unforgettable instances where Game 7 has gone to overtime, adding an extra layer of drama and suspense.

The first overtime Game 7 in Stanley Cup Finals history occurred in 1950, when the Detroit Red Wings faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game was a marathon affair, stretching into double overtime before Pete Babando scored the Cup-winning goal for Detroit.

The second instance of an overtime Game 7 came in 1954, also between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs. This time, Detroit once again emerged victorious, with Tony Leswick scoring a fortunate goal in overtime to give the Red Wings their second overtime win in Game 7 of the Cup Final in five seasons.

Since then, no other Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals has gone to overtime. The rarity of this occurrence highlights the intensity and competitiveness of the series, where teams push themselves to the limit to avoid a heartbreaking loss in the final game.
